What does family mediation cost in the West Midlands?

A MIAM, the first meeting you each have with a mediator, usually costs around £120 per person. Mediation sessions are typically £130 to £170 an hour per person. If your case involves a child, the government's Family Mediation Voucher Scheme can pay up to £500 towards the sessions, and you don't pay anything if either of you qualifies for legal aid. Our guide to what mediation costs and how the voucher works has a worked example.

How to choose a family mediator

  • Check the mediator is accredited on the Family Mediation Council register. Only accredited mediators can sign the form you need to apply to court.
  • If your case involves a child, ask whether they take part in the voucher scheme.
  • Ask whether they offer child-inclusive mediation, where a specially trained mediator talks to your child.
  • Ask about legal aid: if either of you qualifies, the MIAM is free for both of you.
