Solicitors in Scotland set their own fees, so ask each firm for a written estimate. A straightforward divorce with no children under 16 and no money to divide can use the simplified procedure, which costs £156 in the sheriff court from 1 April 2026 and doesn't need a solicitor. An ordinary divorce costs £191 to start. Our guide to divorce in Scotland explains both.
The Scottish Legal Aid Board can tell you whether you could get help with a solicitor's fees.
Most divorces in Scotland go through the local sheriff court, and one of you must have lived in that court's area for at least 40 days. The Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service lists every sheriff court and its contact details.
Not sure you need one? Our guide on whether you need a solicitor for your divorce explains when people manage without.
Mediation can be quicker and cheaper than going through solicitors alone. See family mediation in the Highlands and Islands.
