A family solicitor advises you on divorce, money, property and children, prepares the paperwork and can represent you in court. A family barrister usually comes in for specialist advice or a court hearing. You don't need either to get divorced, but legal advice matters most when there is money or children to sort out.
11 organisations listed. Listings are for information, not endorsements. Details can change, so check with each organisation.

Filter family solicitors and barristers by where you live, cost and how to get help
Get advice before you agree a financial settlement, especially if there is a house, a pension or a business involved, or you think your spouse is not being open about money. Talk to a solicitor straight away if your spouse has started court proceedings, if you have concerns about your safety, or if you can't agree arrangements for your children. Some services, such as The Divorce Surgery, have one barrister advise you both together.
Solicitors charge by the hour or offer fixed fees for set pieces of work, and prices vary with experience and location. Ask for a written estimate before you start, and what it includes. Court fees are extra: £628 to apply for a divorce, £62 for a consent order and £321 to apply for a financial order (GOV.UK court fees). Our divorce cost calculator gives a range for your situation.
Check the firm on the SRA Solicitors Register, which shows whether a solicitor or firm is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Look for experience in your issue, such as pensions or children, and ask who will do the day-to-day work. Many family solicitors are members of Resolution, whose members agree to a code of practice that aims to reduce conflict. For a shortlist near you, find a family solicitor or get matched.
