When should you get money advice?

Get guidance early, before you agree a settlement, so you know what you have and what it is worth. Pensions are often the largest asset after the house and are easy to overlook. If you are struggling with debts or bills, StepChange and National Debtline give free debt advice, and Turn2us can check which benefits you could claim now your circumstances have changed.

How much does financial advice cost?

MoneyHelper, the debt charities and benefits checkers are free. Financial advisers charge for advice, often as a fixed fee, an hourly rate or a percentage of the money they advise on, and they should tell you what they charge before they start. Adviser search sites such as Unbiased and VouchedFor are free to use.

How to choose a financial adviser

Check any adviser on the FCA's Financial Services Register before you share your details. For divorce, look for experience with pensions: some settlements need a specialist pension report, so ask whether the adviser has done this work before. You can also find a financial adviser who specialises in divorce on divorcd.
