When should you reach out?

Call a helpline whenever you need someone to talk to, including in the middle of the night. If you have been struggling for more than a couple of weeks, speak to your GP. In England you can also refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies for anxiety and depression. If you are in danger, or thinking about ending your life, call 999.

How much does counselling cost?

Samaritans, Shout, Mind's information and NHS services are free. Private counselling is paid, and fees vary with location and experience, so ask before you book. Apps such as Headspace charge a subscription.

How to find a counsellor

Look for a counsellor on a professional register, such as the BACP Register, and ask whether they have worked with people going through separation. Counselling Directory lets you search by issue and by whether sessions are online. In Scotland, Breathing Space offers support from NHS 24, and in Northern Ireland, Lifeline answers 24 hours a day. You can also find a therapist who works with separation.
